Conclusion

A month ago, we asked ourselves: How could we help the elderly? Or, how could we make the lives of the elderly easier? Our solution was to create a portable light switch that could control your lights. But we took it up a notch, instead of using a normal switch, we used Siri. Which you could then ask to turn the lights on/off. Unfortunately, our invention was not successful. As we were unable to finish the project. We still think that if this project was successful, it could help the elderly a great amount.
In our opinion, the most important thing about this project was that it was a great learning experience. Some things that we learned through this scientific venture include what a Raspberry Pi was, and this was also the main part of our project. A Raspberry Pi is basically a small computer, and it can also be used for many other electrical projects, such as robotics, and home automation. We learned how to boot up a Raspberry Pi, and how to install basic operating systems like Linux, and Raspbian. We also learned about different kind of relays, and how to create a basic circuit. In addition to this, We also learned a bit about coding and how coding works. It was a long process in creating this, and we tried our best, but it didn’t work out.
There were parts in the experiment that went really smoothly, like simply booting up the Raspberry Pi, and learning about the different parts of a computer. But, there was a lot of troubleshooting to do, such as obtaining RCA output when booting the RPI, on a new SD Card. The solution to that problem was pressing the “4” key on the keyboard, so the SD card with NOOBS installed can detect when RCA is being used. Another problem we had was obtaining the resources. We needed to find an apple device to use. We needed a device that was on IOS 6 or lower, and the device needed to have Siri on it. Unfortunately we were unsuccessful. Furthermore, we also needed to find a relay board, to use, but when one of us went to the store, they didn’t have what we needed. We believe that our failure was because we weren’t too familiar with this topic. From all the knowledge we’ve obtained in the duration of this project, we believe that if we were given a task similar to this project, then we would be more successful.
One thing I would’ve changed about this assignment was the time we had. I believe that if we were given more time to work on this, we would’ve had more time to obtain the resources, and conduct more research, we would’ve been more successful. Another thing that we would change is our accessibility of our resources. When we went to the store, they didn’t have the resources that we needed. We tried looking in our houses to see if we had what we needed, but we didn’t. Throughout the duration of this project, we were constantly filling our brains with knowledge. Family matters arose, and some of us had to tend to their family members. To conclude, our science project was not successful. If we had more time, maybe we would be successful, but this project was all about the learning experience, and we learned a lot.
